What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy, although much misunderstood, is nothing more than a very deep state of relaxation. While you are in this relaxed state it is possible to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious mind, where real change can take place. The obvious benefit is speed. What may take months of talk therapy can be effectively treated with hypnotherapy in one or two sessions.

The conscious part of your mind is logical and rational and it acts as a sort of ‘bouncer’ or doorman for your subconscious mind. It ensures that very little new information that could change our beliefs or habits gets in. The problem is that the conscious mind rejects good change as well as bad, mostly because it wants to protect us. It works on the principle that everything is working fine, so no need for any changes.

Your subconscious mind is where your emotions, feelings, habits and beliefs are stored. So who we are, how we feel, our habits, beliefs and fears are all programmed into our subconscious mind. The really good news is that the subconscious is not hard wired – it is re-programmable. That means we can change it to make us feel how we want to feel, believe what we want to believe.

Normally we do not have direct access to our subconscious mind to make the changes we want to make. When we try the bouncer that is our conscious mind gets in the way. Hypnosis is like putting an arm around the bouncers shoulder and gently moving him around the corner and out of the way. This allows suggestions we want and agree with to go straight into our subconscious mind. Once there they become the new programme, creating permanent change.
